After reading parts of the script for episode
201 ("Life, Loss, Leaving") we now know that the character of Marina
attempts to commit suicide (by taking 3 bottles of pills) after she has a
nervous breakdown. She is saved and taken to hospital. From the parts we
have been able to read she is not actually seen but only referred to, thus
fuelling the rumours that she indeed WONT be back at all this season.

Some bad news for all Marina
fans with Ilene herself saying that she WILL NOT be back for season 2 in an
interview with Windy City Times. Here are the excerpts from the interview:
AM: ... I’m going to give you a character and give me the word that comes
into your head as to where that character has evolved.
AM: Marina.
IL: Marina is not coming back. She had a rough time at the end of the
season with Jenny and we are going to deal with where she went.
---
AM: The main characters … will all of them be back next year? And will
there be others added to the group or to 2-3 episode character arcs?
IL: There will be a few new characters. There are two characters coming
back for either a limited run or not coming back at all. But I am
excited to be introducing some new characters.

Our unnamed source has confirmed that the character of
Marina WILL NOT be returning to the show outside of a few minor
appearances that divest her character of inclusion in the sub-plots, etc.
previously established in Season 1.

Unfortunately it seems that Karina will NOT be back for season 2.
Ted Casablanca reports on
Eonline that:
"Karina Lombard was asked not to return anytime
soon to the popular, fierce L Word. (Too sad. For the audience, at least.)"
But we know this isn't exactly true, since Ilene has stated more than once
that she was asked back.
Karina's lawyer reports from the
Save Marina
website:
"She was invited but unfortunately the business
terms and amount of
episodes offered were not workable. Its too bad. She would really like
to be back on the show. Your continued efforts are always helpful.
If Showtime sees how much the fans want her, they may come back with a
fairer proposal".
Doesn't look good unless a serious campaign gets underway soon.

The website of Karina's publicist has posted
this message from Karina:
"If we don't stand up
for Love we'll fall for everything else."
I am so grateful for your support.
This week is the last episode of the L word,
you have my promise that I'm doing my best to save Marina!
Happy Easter & Passover
and any other holiday I may not know about!
Karina Lombard
Amour Amore Amor Liebe that's lots o' Love!
** PS This is one of my favorite havens in Tahiti.
I wish I was there right now, don't you?!

We have printed a message below written by a
source very close to the show who has asked to remain unnamed to protect
this person's privacy. It is unclear to us whether the producers have
decided not to renew Karina's contract for the entire season, whether Karina
has decided to bow out of the show, or whether some circumstances outside
everyone's control have made it impossible for her to return. We are
leaning toward the final reason however, as is implied in the first
paragraph below.
"Karina is a beautiful actress
and person with incredible potential on screen and off. For myself, it
has been exhilarating working with her. Though she may have complications
and/or issues that might make her continued work on "The L Word"
difficult, if not impossible... it is with my sincerest hope... that she
remains an integral aspect of the rich female dichotomy that, I believe,
has made "The L Word" a ground-breaking endeavor into the mindset of not
only lesbian women, but modern women of all races, creeds, and sexual
orientations."
"The L Word" is one of the
strongest dramas on television, and this is in every way because of
Karina's contributions. If we were to lose her from our family, our
cast... I cannot help but think that in some way the show would lose a
degree of passion, heart, and beauty, in truth...the very essence of what
it struck forth, trying to obtain. But "The L Word" would move on...
emptier perhaps... but never lacking.
I know Karina wishes only that
the show succeed. She believes, as does I and every member of the
cast, that "The L Word" is a project bigger, better, and more important
than any one of us. It is not just a job... it is a cause. It is
righteous, and integral that its message, and viewpoints, reach people.
It is the most important thing any of us have ever done with our lives,
and for that reason alone... we know... that "The L Word" will persevere,
no matter how the cast evolves, or what becomes of any one of us. Our
message, the message of lesbian women, of bi women, of all women... will
continue to flourish. "The L Word" has it's wings now. We're taking
flight. Wait till we soar.
Even if in small ways at first...
"The L Word" is changing the modern world's understanding of women, of
what women believe in, what we strive for, and what every one of us needs
from life, and those we share our lives with. "The L Word" has something
to say. It's voice will be heard. And the world will respond.
The world IS responding. Nothing can change that inevitability. Nothing
can change its impact on the future. Nothing can stop its message from
ringing clear. It beckons us to an understanding tomorrow... one all of
us can wide-eyed grow excited for. L
stands for many things... but most important, L stands for "learning". I
believe life is about nothing else.
For me, I know why I am proud of my work on "The L Word." I know why
***** any of us would tell you we are proud of our accomplishments and
contributions to this show...
...It's changed our lives.
And we know...it's changed yours."
We're learning together what tomorrow holds.
Together.
L for me will always mean...
...Hope."

(Updated: Apr 2, 2004)
As it currently stands, we believe that Karina will
return for a few episodes in Season Two. Karina seemed to express
interest in returning to the series when she was interviewed by PlanetOut
earlier this year, replying when asked whether she would return for season
two, "that depends if Showtime invites me back!" It was
later stated by
Ilene Chaiken (at a recent panel discussion in NYC) that all main cast members would be back for a second season.
Though nothing has been officially announced since, it would seem that she will
return long enough for the writers to tie up any loose ends with the
character of Marina, and that she may then be leaving the show. (Updated: Apr 5, 2004) In an interview
with PlanetOut, when asked if there will be cast changes for season two,
Ilene Chaiken responds:
"We haven't done
our season two casting yet, but there will be new cast members, and I'm
excited to see who they are going to be. But we'll have the same main cast.
There are a couple of characters whose stories will be receding, who won't
be as much a part of the ensemble as they have been -- but for the most
part, this is our cast, and we will be introducing some new people into
their lives."
-------------------------------------------
An enormous amount of rumors and speculation have
been flying lately over the fate of the character Marina, and of the actress
Karina Lombard and whether or not she will return for a second season of The
L Word.
Initial rumors started because Marina was the only
main character in early episodes of season one who was given only a first
name and not a surname. Viewers thought that perhaps this was
indicative of the possibility that Marina's purpose on the show was only to
entice Jenny and to draw out Jenny's character as bisexual instead of
straight. It was thought that she may leave the show after fulfilling
her purpose, and the main storyline would focus more on Jenny and her life
journey. Well, after a few episodes, Marina was in fact given a last
name, and this rumor began to fall flat.
The second, more disturbing, rumor was floated
implying that Karina has problems on the set and doesn't get along with
co-stars. People seemed to remember hearing reports of her being
difficult or not meshing well with actors she worked with on films The
Firm and Legends of the Fall. It was reported that her
contract may not have been renewed for Season Two and that her role may be
recast or cut.
