New York, NY-- On March 8th The L Word Cast members Daniela Sea, Laurel Holloman, producer Ilene Chaiken and author Kera Bolonik signed copies of the new L Word book  "Welcome to our Planet" in New York City in what turned out to be a 5 hour long event that spaned from Times Square to Park Slope.

The official book signing took place at 6pm at the Virgin Mega Store, Time's Square. At least several hundred people waited in a line which snaked through the isles of cds and DVDs up to the reception table where Daniela, Laurel, Ilene and Kara sat. Patiently and in good spirits the L word crew chatted, signed books and took photos with fans. The 2 hours passed in moments and as the last books were signed it was announced that the signing would continue in Brooklyn at the popular lesbian venue the Catty Shack.

By 8pm the Catty Shack was already packed in what appeared to be a previously unannounced appearance by the cast. There is something to be said for the lesbian phone tree. Word travels fast and furiously through an impassioned community. Though the scene was a little more chill, the crowd was just as large and the L ladies were just as friendly and responsive as a few hours earlier.

In light of Dana's story line, which has rocked the L word watching world, our reaction seems to punctuate the level at which we've come to own this show. The adage "art imitates life" has never seemed so true. Are we not watching the narratives of our own lives unfold though the names and places may be different? The exchange of creative thought, feelings and actions seems to go both ways from the writers and actors to the audience. Our passionate thoughts and our physical presence has created a community in dialogue; sometimes angry, sad, elated, provoked, and in the end hopefully liberated.

Earlier in the evening at the Catty Shack I meet up with a friend, a computer scientist working on artificial intelligence, someone I admire for her clear logical and dispassionate thinking. She was thumbing through the L Word book she had just purchased, slightly giddy and remarking on how the cast is even "better looking" in person. Before getting into the long line to have her copy signed I asked her what she thought this total obsession with the L word is. She thought for a moment and said "its not just a TV show its a social movement."
