Past News Briefs:

Lisa Gay Hamilton, late of "The Practice," has signed to do a guest-starring arc in Showtime's new series "The L Word." She'll play an artist who has an affair with Bette Porter, played by Jennifer Beals.

SET YOUR VCRs: Watch Mia Kirshner on January 15 when she will be a guest on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.

The title of Episode #14 has officially been changed from "Loose Lips" to "Limb From Limb."  Could this mean a possible re-writing of the Season Finale?  Or perhaps it was simply a creative decision made to more aptly describe the tone of the episode.  I guess we'll have to stay tuned and find out.

The January 20, 2004 issue of The Advocate (available now) features a cover story of Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels.  In this long (10-page!) interview Tammy talks about her character on The L Word and what she thinks of the series.  You can read excerpts from the interview here.

The most important type of relationship on the The L Word is friendship, and it forms the bedrock of the series.  The pilot does a good job laying the groundwork for the series and making you care about the characters, even if it is primarily focused around Bette and Tina's relationship and the Marina-Jenny-Tim triangle.  But if the pilot is good, the subsequent episodes are better. The cast seem more comfortable together as the episodes progress, and the storylines improve as the writers make the dialogue more nuanced and less expository.  Although the characters of The L Word appear similar on the surface...once you get to know them, they begin to carve out distinctly different niches.  Read more in depth review of the first 5 episodes at AfterEllen.comBack in July, I was walking through Times Square and saw among the massive billboards advertisements for Dead Like Me and Six Feet Under.  And I thought "How cool would it be to see a billboard like this for The L Word... I could just imagine... a 60-foot Kate staring down at me from the sign."  Well, look no further my friends, for that day has arrived. Scott Bairstow, originally cast in Eric Mabius' role as "Tim," entered a plea on December 5 that will allow him to avoid going to trial on sexual assualt charges Bairstow was slapped with the charges in May of 2003 (which led to the role of Jenny's fiancé being recast), and he now faces up to nine months in jail.

The L Word Defined: A behind-the-scenes look at the series is now airing on Showtime.  This special features interviews with cast and crew, plot and character discussion, and numerous clips from the upcoming series.  Defined is currently being shown on various Showtime channels in the U.S.  Check your local listings for the schedule. (run time=15mins)

The L Word crew has outdone themselves by casting an impressive list of guest stars for the upcoming series.  Anne Archer guest stars as Alice's "B" actress mother; Roseanna Arquette portrays the wife of a studio head who comes in to get her hair cut by Shane and changes more than her haircut; Lolita Davidovich plays a costume designer who is also Marina's lover; Ossie Davis plays Melvin Porter, father of Bette and Kit; Devon Gummersall plays "Lisa" a lesbian identified man who has a relationship with Alice; Kelly Lynch portrays "Ivan," a drag King who falls for "Kit"; Tammy Lynn Michaels portrays a jilted lover of Shane who stalks her; Julian Sands plays a college professor of Jenny's; Snoop Dogg is "Slim Daddy," a rap star who samples a song that "Kit" wrote a number of years ago; and Holland Taylor plays "Peggy Peabody," an eccentric and wealthy art collector whom Bette convinces to allow her controversial Provocation collection to show at the CAC.

Guest actresses (Lisa Gay Hamilton, Lauren Lee Smith, Jacqueline Samuda, Alana Husband, Rekha Sharma and Brenda Campbell) and guest actors (Colin Cunningham Matthew Currie Holmes Kevin Durand) have been added to the growing list of individuals set to make guest appearances in future episodes.

On August 15th Pam Grier visited the Hipjoint Studios to lay down vocals on the updated production of Angela Winbush's "It's the Real Thing".  Snoop Dogg also took time out from touring to add a rap as only he can. The track will be featured in an episode of The L Word.
