Radish: WHAT MADE YOU TAKE THE OFFER FOR THIS TELEVISION SERIES?
Jennifer Beals: I
thought it was an incredibly interesting character, in that you have somebody
who seems so strong and so in control of everything, but at the core, is
incredibly vulnerable. And, on a larger level, I was really excited to be part
of a project that I thought could potentially change people's minds about the
way they see other people or experience other people and could, perhaps,
really save somebody's life, who has never seen themselves represented, at
least as a multiplicity, in any kind of pop culture form.
Katherine Moennig:
Rarely do I ever read scripts that I find very honest, with three-dimensional
characters, especially for women. When I read this, there were so many
elements that were amazing. It was sexy, it was true, and there was depth and
emotion. It was a very rare, special project. So, when I got the job, I was
highly flattered because I knew this would make some type of impact because
it's very unique and it's very unusual to find such great stories that involve
women. It was a beautifully written story.
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT YOUR
CHARACTER THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE PROJECT?
Grier: The richness of the character.
Originally, Kit was a butch character, and I did research on the different
dynamics and social structures within the lesbian world. It's not generalized,
and I think what's really going to inform audiences is that there is no such
thing as cut and dried genders. There's so many different types of gender,
sexuality and orientation within the lesbian community, why not represent it
correctly? When I saw that this was exactly what they were doing with this
show, and I could learn something and explore an incredible character and a
world, how could I not take the role? It was very exciting and a huge
challenge.
WERE THE SEX SCENES AN ISSUE
FOR YOU AT ALL?
Holloman: To
me, sex scenes were never really that hard. Jennifer and I are really
comfortable with each other. In the film world, I've done sex scenes with
women and men. Something about getting older makes them seem like they've
gotten easier. I also think it can be easier with a woman. One of the things I
like about the show is that there are a lot of different types of lesbian sex
scenes. Sex in a seven-year relationship is the kind of sex that happens from
knowing someone for a really long time. I think the challenge and the fun part
was trying to discover what that was. There was an instant chemistry between
us right away, and an instant respect. Jennifer is really wonderful to work
with. She is incredibly smart and she's incredibly detailed with her work. I
think we complement each other in ways where we're different.
